Artist Profile: FUZZY TEETH
FUZZY TEETH, the interminable indie-pop and experimental rock project fronted by the Netherlands’ Anthony Koenn, has made an undeniable statement with its debut album: one that centers around Koenn’s delicious blend of maximalist sounds and colliding influences. From his time in more punk-driven projects such as PEACH., Koenn brings a heavy, intense sensibility to a creative process that forces him to slow down, resulting in a simultaneous immediacy and intentionality of sound that thoroughly captivates the listener.
Koenn’s familiarity with music began at a young age. His father was a long-time bassist, playing with bands such as Lois Lane and Boom Boom Mancini, and although he didn’t pressure Koenn into a pursuit of music, he was more than willing to help him learn when he requested it. Moreover, he made Koenn a mixtape of various genres: a tool that was meant to help his son determine his own taste.
The last few songs on the mixtape were heavier, more rock-leaning tracks. Although Koenn cannot recall exactly what the songs were, he remembers immediately gravitating toward that sound. As he grew older, this sensibility only expanded– artists like King Krule, and anyone who could craft unique atmospheres, dominated his headspace.
“King Krule was a big influence when he came out. I was like, ‘Whoa, what the f*ck? This is so different.’ It was so intimate, but also so heavy, which was, I think, a nice new thing. Stuff like Tyler, the Creator and even JPEGMafia. I really like that stuff. Just crazy, authentic stuff that only this specific person can make. I like it if it's so natural, but so out there as well. I try to do that myself.”
As Koenn grew older, and his prowess on his instrument progressed, he leaned even further into the heavier, punkier side of the spectrum. He played in various teenage bands, and over time, he went from being the lead writer of these groups to the frontman, gaining valuable experience on the stage and in exercising his own voice.
These experiences culminated with his time in PEACH., a three-piece punk band he fronted in the late 2010s. He fondly remembers crowd-surfing and truly letting go of his on-stage reservations for the first time as a part of that band– but, more importantly, they gave him a comfortable backdrop with no borders and no inhibitions upon which to exercise his growing abilities as a songwriter and performer.
The group caught traction, but the Pandemic quickly put an end to the project. This proved to be perhaps the most formative moment of Koenn’s artistic life.
During the lull that resulted, he began experimenting for the first time with making music in a DAW, opening himself up to the endless soundscaping possibilities that the computer presented. To the artistic mind attracted to the singular and the maximal, this can be a temptation too great to bear.
“I think, since you can layer so much in the computer, I went for the maximalistic way of doubling everything and f*cking doing the whole ear candy everywhere. Especially in the beginning. And I was listening to a lot of BECK then, stuff with the heavy drum computers and the distorted guitars… I think that's a lot where the sound came from. But, you know, it evolves every time.”
Koenn very quickly had a demo tape on his hands of songs he had constructed in the DAW, and he decided to release it on SoundCloud under a new name: FUZZY TEETH. He originally had no immediate intentions of turning it into a full-fledged project. But, once he got booked for a festival under his new name, he needed to quickly assemble a band to support his new venture.
From there, things took on new life.
It remained a solo project from a creative standpoint, but having the project truly come to fruition with a full band gave Koenn the extra motivation he needed to dive headfirst into the new sonic world he had discovered. Koenn released his first two EPs, “People jazz” and “Snakes and Ladders”, in early 2024.
Their follow up, 2025’s FUZZY TEETH, truly tells a much more tactile story of Koenn’s wide creative range, however. From the atmospheric indie tones of tracks like “HORSEFIGHTER” to the raw, unbridled energy of tracks like “F*CK IT UP”, the full array of Koenn’s influences is on display across the breadth of the project.
Now, with FUZZY TEETH having taken its first full step into the limelight, Koenn plans to act with more creative immediacy, avoiding some of the delays and reluctances that have inhibited his creative process in the past.
“There's something in the beginning of songs where it's so fresh and it feels urgent, so I think I'm just going to write stuff quicker and record them.. straight away. I think maybe this last debut album, we have been mixing for like a year and a half, off and on. I don't want it anymore. I just want to get it out there, get it on tape and then f*cking make it nice. And then it's done. I can move on to new stuff.”
Koenn’s upcoming project is a collaborative EP with long-time friend plonki, entitled “pretty and warm and dark and vile”. The next single for the project, “Fruitflies” will be out March 6, while the project as a whole will release in April.
