Maybe Not Tonight — Lime Garden
Maybe Not Tonight — Lime Garden
Wow. The LG Massive has certainly just won over its latest member. I hope they have merch. I hope the merch is a Lime Garden baggie and a Lime Garden tube of chewable electrolytes. And a Lime Garden month of therapy.
Maybe Not Tonight is the “next best band’s” sophomore album, a significant step-up from their 2024 debut One More Thing, complete with sharper production, more ambitious sounds, and a dazzlingly immersive narrative, running from the very first rumbles to the final, atonal whine.
The album follows a deeply fragmented poetic voice through the hedonism, fragility, anger and nihilism of a rager, with frequent, wobbly adventures in the blurred heat of the smoking area providing a fitting outlet for its slurred story of heartbreak.
Much has been written on this project since its release in April 2026, with critics focusing on the backstory of the band’s “mass break-up”, their “wonk-pop” styling, their “polished and wonderfully unhinged sound”. However, from my very first listen-through – through the naïve energy of “23” and “Cross My Heart”, to the pounding irony of “All Bad Parts” and “Maybe Not Tonight”, and finally to the heartbreak of “Body”, and “Always Talking About You” – this project begged for immersion.
My process was uncertain at first: this project does so much show and so little tell that the position of the critic feels unstable – a problem of accuracy in reproduction without sliding into simple repetition. In spite of this, I knew exactly how these tracks made me feel, so I did what I often do when struggling to form a critical view: I leant into automatic writing (with gratitude to André Breton), and I only realized that I’d stumbled on the heart of the album when I reached “All Bad Parts” – two seemingly distinct worlds of chaos slowly coalescing.
In kind, I propose the following companion poem, written to be read alongside the album: far from a critical perspective, this is my gleeful acceptance of their invitation to dance. Timestamped for style.
As far as you could go,
Wam winds slanting pins on palm trees,
So insistent: would that I swim in the gel,
8pm:
It’s crumbling now,
Now you listen
Have you ever cut a melon with a lightsabre?
You’ll find the gaps in your soul in the singeing fuzz,
Where three more shots won’t make a difference to the scarring:
Mistrustingly
Relatable this person you were,
Beyond reach in
This waste of space and time
What fades in the dying moments of youth?
11pm:
“I’m coming around” 1 ,
And FUCK you’re gonna hear about it,
And I’m bringing the oral history of this nation to your door,
Do with it as you please,
Don’t spit it on my cheek
As you sing it back to me,
I’m in a club in South London in 2004,
Sleek hair flicking
In concentric circles
Buoyant on cigarette smoke
Uncannily clean,
I’m tomorrow
I’m behind
I’m apparently between ---
Your death is mine,
“I did it” 2
You were too good for me,
You were trapped,
Now you’re running down the sink, pink and black,
I’m free from you too:
1am:
If you didn’t know unstoppable is a version of you
Wrapped in moss smoke and purple curtain
And I’m up there already and I’m slanting off the moon
But you don’t know, till
“You catch my eye
Just in time” 3
But the train is leaving and I’m both on the
Platform and in the luggage compartment
With your baggage and mine,
This is so angry I feel it radiating into my sinuses and lats,
And still I bounce,
“Till my lungs go brown” 4 .
1:22am:
Something has changed now,
Much more pensive,
Rocking me
Like a hammock between solace
Pain, memory
Regret
Attention;
I hear her crying behind that guitar
I hear the guitar crying too,
“I hate the way I’m looking at you,
You look so beautiful” 5 ,
I’m caught looking back,
It washes over me like the present never could,
Bleeding from a capsule over crystalline
Valleys,
Dissipating up.
2:04am:
I’m so jealous. Burn it down. All knife-edge,
A box falling open
At buzzing hinges
City dazzled by foreign images
But sure it spins and pulls
You to its path,
She’s all I can be, she’s me if I knew myself, she’s who I was before,
Can I ever fucking leave this place
Place I built sleepwalking;
3:30am:
The song is whining,
I’m hopping over trellises
The sun greener than yellow
On bleach white wickerwork,
And the children have returned,
I ask if this attempt to cleanse will it work,
It sure tilts in the breeze,
And you sure don’t have much to say anymore,
And I’m tired of talking.
4am:
Me too, all my friends are so hot,
It was an item on a shopping
List I threw in the trash,
Your name was on it
And now my dreams are back:
5:42am:
Lick sweat from my neck
Screeching
A city high on my hangover fumes,
Blocked nose on the sunlit stairs
Weeks pass without you on my mind,
Time stood still for me
I didn’t use it,
I didn’t use it.
